Up And Coming Reads | The Paper Menagerie
This book was brought to my attention while listening to the 'Books on the Nightstand' podcast, which has sadly come to an end, and Michael Kindness's description of the various stories made me stop to write down the name so that I could look into this book further.
The stories cover a variety of subjects from paper animals that come to life to a person whose life depends on keeping an ice cube safe. All the stories look interesting and from reading other reviews they seem to deeply explore various aspects of life. One of the stories listed that piqued my interest apart from the titular story was The Bookmaking Habits of Select Species.

Ken’s debut novel is THE GRACE OF KINGS (2015), the first in a silkpunk epic fantasy series. In addition to his original fiction, Ken is also the translator of numerous literary and genre works from Chinese to English. His translation of THE THREE-BODY PROBLEM, by Liu Cixin, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015, the first translated novel to ever receive that honor.
A publishing event: Bestselling author Ken Liu selects his award-winning science fiction and fantasy tales for a groundbreaking collection—including a brand-new piece exclusive to this volume.
With his debut novel, The Grace of Kings, taking the literary world by storm, Ken Liu now shares his finest short fiction in The Paper Menagerie. This mesmerizing collection features all of Ken’s award-winning and award-finalist stories, including: “The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary” (Finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, and Theodore Sturgeon Awards), “Mono No Aware” (Hugo Award winner), “The Waves” (Nebula Award finalist), “The Bookmaking Habits of Select Species” (Nebula and Sturgeon award finalists), “All the Flavors” (Nebula award finalist), “The Litigation Master and the Monkey King” (Nebula Award finalist), and the most awarded story in the genre’s history, “The Paper Menagerie” (The only story to win the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards).
A must-have for every science fiction and fantasy fan, this beautiful book is an anthology to savor.
